Still Life Platinum Photography by Gregory Leupp

The Platinum Print: Classical Photography

The photo medium has grown from the early days of wet plates and hour-long exposures to palm-sized cameras and post-production tools that have nothing to do with a camera. There was a time when, by necessity, making a photograph was a long and involved process of contemplation and application of studied techniques. The platinum process has been around for over a hundred years. The variables are simple, yet infinite, in their combination. The photographer controls light on the film with a lens, and controls the print with light and developer. An 8X10 negative is contact-printed onto paper that has been hand-coated with a light-sensitive emulsion. (This) process, in conjunction with paper types, can render tones from cool blacks to warm browns, and highlights of great delicacy and texture.

A man's work is nothing but this slow trek to rediscover, through the detours of art, those two or three great and simple images in whose presence his heart first opened.
-Albert Camus
